$48 million dollar pledge made to help farmers in the developing world


Yesterday, the National Science Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced they would collaborate on innovative research to help farmers in the developing world. For Associated Press story click here. According to the AP,
[t]he project announced Monday would infuse $48 million over five years into agriculture research. Scientists will be asked to propose projects that address drought, pests, disease, soil quality and other problems facing small farmers and their families.

This is part of the a pledge the Gates Foundation made 2 ½ years ago when it got involved in agricultural develop, and pledged $1.2 billion to help farmers in the developing world.
